Our Causes

Zonta International is committed to improving women’s human rights at international, national, and local level. We seek to influence the drafting and implementation of laws and general attitudes and behaviors. Zonta advocates for real equality, not just formal equality. We do this by giving women a voice through the following campaigns:

UN Commission on the Status of Women

Of the 6,155 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with consultative status at the United Nations (UN), only 141 have General Consultative Status, the highest status an NGO can have at the UN. Zonta International was granted General Consultative Status in 1969.
As an NGO with General Consultative Status, Zonta International is invited to participate in the annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York.

Ending Child Marriage

Since 2014, Zonta has supported projects that work to end child marriage. In 2018, we donated US$2 million to UNFPA-UNICEF’s Global Programme to End Child Marriage - the first private sector donor to the Global Programme. To support Phase II of their program, we donated an additional US$1,500,000. Thus, we continue to prevent child marriage, increase opportunities for young ladies, and support married girls.

Since its inception in 2012, the campaign has raised awareness of international violations of women’s rights.
